MTN Ghana Commits $1.1 Billion to 3-Year Network Expansion and 5G Rollout, Discloses Communications Minister Sam George | Discuss Ghana

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, disclosed that telecommunications giant MTN Ghana has committed over $1.1 billion in capital expenditure over the next three years to expand network coverage, deploy new infrastructure, and accelerate 5G service delivery across the nation.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House, the Minister explained that the massive investment follows recent regulatory reforms by the National Communications Authority (NCA)—including the removal of the wholesale 5G exclusivity framework—to encourage private sector competition and digital expansion.

Financial & Infrastructure Breakdown:

Total Commitment: Over $1.1 billion allocated across a three-year period, with approximately $380 million deployed in 2026 alone.

Record Cell Site Deployment: Construction of 800 new cell sites—marking MTN Ghana's largest single-year network build in over a decade.

Progress Update: Over 180 new sites are already operational and actively carrying traffic.

Targeted Focus Areas:

Rural & Peri-Urban Coverage: Priority is directed toward rural and peri-urban areas where network deficit and signal challenges have been most pronounced.

MP-Mapped Connectivity Gaps: Sites were mapped out directly in collaboration with Members of Parliament to pinpoint exact underserved locations within their respective constituencies.
