Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has declared that policy interventions and market adjustments in the telecommunications sector are delivering better value for mobile internet consumers across the country.

According to the Minister, regulatory measures overseen by the Ministry and the National Communications Authority (NCA) have successfully lowered the effective cost per gigabyte, allowing citizens to get more data for less money.

Data Affordability Reforms:

Increased Value Per Cedi: The Minister emphasized that tariff adjustments and package restructuring by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have increased the volume of data provided per bundle compared to previous pricing structures.

Reducing the Cost Barrier: Lowering the financial burden of internet access is positioned as a foundational step toward driving digital inclusion, e-commerce, and equitable access to online public services.

Sector Drivers & Infrastructure Policy:

Infrastructure Sharing: Government initiatives encouraging shared telecom infrastructure (like fiber backbones and cell towers) have driven down operational costs for service providers, allowing savings to be passed to consumers.

National Connectivity Push: The lower pricing structure aligns with wider national goals, including the rollout of 5G networks, the national large language model project, and expanded rural telephony coverage.
