Traffic Alert: Major Diversions at Tetteh Quarshie Interchange | Discuss Ghana

As of Monday, March 9, 2026, the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has officially implemented a major traffic management plan at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange. These temporary adjustments are necessary to facilitate T-beam launching works for the expansion of the interchange bridge, a critical component of the $350 million Accra-Tema Motorway and Extensions Project.

Key Diversion Details

The new traffic flow is expected to remain in place for approximately four months (until July 2026):

Northbound Closure (Accra to Madina): All lanes on the N4 northbound carriageway heading from Accra toward Madina are now temporarily closed.

Reconfigured Southbound Side: The southbound carriageway (usually four lanes from Madina to Accra) has been split into a contraflow system with two lanes in each direction.

Project Scope: The works involve widening the interchange bridge to three lanes on each side to resolve the chronic bottleneck where the N1 and N4 corridors meet.

Current Progress: The overall Motorway extension project, being executed by the Ghanaian-owned firm Maripoma Limited, is currently reported to be 35% complete.

Commuter Advisory and Safety

The GHA and the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) have issued the following guidelines for motorists:

Expect Delays: Significant congestion is anticipated during peak morning and evening hours as six lanes of traffic merge into four.

Safety First: The lane reduction is "necessary in the interest of Public Safety" to provide a secure working zone for personnel beneath and on the bridge.

Follow Signage: Motorists must strictly adhere to directional signs, observe speed limits, and cooperate with traffic officials on-site.

Information Line: For real-time updates or inquiries, the GHA Public Affairs Division can be reached via WhatsApp at 0551622244.

Alternative Routes

To avoid the Tetteh Quarshie bottleneck, motorists are encouraged to consider these alternatives:

From Accra to Madina: Use the Boundary Road through East Legon to connect to the N4 at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA).

From Tema to Madina: Exit the Motorway at the Abattoir or Flowerpot interchanges to navigate through internal community roads.
