Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has called on Ghanaian sports media to spark rigorous public debate over the persistent lack of world-class football pitches across the country, questioning why infrastructure remains underdeveloped despite multiple FIFA World Cup appearances.
Speaking on the state of national sports facilities following recurring criticism over playing surfaces at venues like the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah pointed out that Ghana has earned millions of dollars in revenue from competing in four separate World Cup tournaments since 2006. He argued that despite these substantial FIFA payouts and global exposure, insufficient funding has been directed toward long-term pitch construction, modern turf management technology, and facility maintenance. The NSA Chief urged journalists, sports administrators, and policymakers to critically analyze where past revenues were allocated and work together toward establishing sustainable, FIFA-standard pitches nationwide.
Prioritizing structured sports infrastructure investment and transparent facility management remains critical to elevating domestic football standards and securing international hosting rights.
