Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has revealed plans to establish a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan laboratory adjacent to the National Cardiothoracic Centre infrastructure in the Ashanti Region as part of the administration's broader 'Mahama Cares' healthcare policy.
Speaking on regional healthcare infrastructure initiatives, Dr. Amoakohene explained that the government will engage the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to secure suitable land allocations for the specialized diagnostic facility. He noted that expanding advanced diagnostic services—including nuclear medicine and oncological imaging—is crucial to improving early disease detection and reducing patient referrals out of the region. Dr. Amoakohene added that complementary infrastructure plans and facility expansions are also underway for the Sawua Regional Hospital to bolster specialized healthcare delivery across the middle belt.
Expanding diagnostic capacity and collaborating with traditional authorities for land acquisition remain central strategies for decentralizing tertiary medical services in Ghana.
