Turning the Tide: Fourth Turbine Online as Akosombo Restoration nears 100% | Discuss Ghana

In a major breakthrough for the national effort to stabilize power supply, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson Esq., has confirmed that engineers have successfully restored and synchronized the fourth turbine at the Akosombo Generating Station.

The announcement, made today, Wednesday, April 29, 2026, signals that the recovery from the April 23 substation fire is entering its final stages.

The Current Generation Status

The restoration of the fourth unit is a significant technical milestone, as it brings the total generation back to nearly 80% of the dam's capacity.

Restoration Timeline: This follows the successful restart of the first three units between Friday, April 24, and Tuesday, April 28.

Capacity Boost: With four out of six units now operational, the total power output from Akosombo has jumped significantly, helping to narrow the 1,000MW deficit that has caused widespread outages over the past week.

Rockson’s Statement: Speaking to the media in Accra, Rockson stated, "The synchronization was successful at approximately 4:30 AM this morning. Our engineers from VRA and GRIDCo have worked tirelessly, and the fourth unit is now feeding steadily into the national grid."

What This Means for Consumers

While the news is positive, Rockson was careful to manage expectations regarding an immediate end to all "localized" outages.

Reduction in Load Management: The addition of the fourth turbine means the "unplanned load shedding" in major cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi should see a sharp decline starting tonight.

Focus on Remaining Units: Engineers are now shifting their total focus to Unit 5 and Unit 6. These two remaining units require more delicate testing of the damaged high-voltage cables before they can be re-energized.

Voltage Stability: Rockson noted that the "low voltage" issues reported by businesses yesterday should improve as the increased generation helps stabilize the grid's frequency.

The "Big Push" Momentum

The Ministry Spokesperson reiterated that this speed of recovery is part of the "Big Push" commitment to infrastructure resilience. He confirmed that Minister John Jinapor remains at the site overseeing the final phases of work to ensure that the entire facility is back to full capacity by the end of this week.
