On Friday, March 13, 2026, the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) issued a revised traffic management plan to facilitate the expansion of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange Bridge.
This revision follows a chaotic week where an initial attempt at weekday diversions on Monday, March 9, caused severe gridlock across the capital, forcing contractors to suspend work and regroup.
Revised Schedule and Reconfigurations
To minimize the impact on workweek commuters, the most intensive operations have been moved to weekends:
Start Date: Saturday, March 14, 2026.
Duration: Weekends and official public holidays for the next four months (until approximately July 2026).
Specific Closure: The N4 Northbound carriageway (Accra toward Madina) will be closed for 2 to 4 hours during T-beam launching operations.
Live Reconfiguration: To keep traffic moving in both directions, the Southbound carriageway (Madina toward Accra) will be split: two lanes will be assigned to Accra-bound traffic, and two lanes will be assigned to Madina-bound traffic.
Suggested Alternative Routes
The GHA has mapped specific detours based on your starting point and destination to avoid the interchange entirely:
| Starting Point | Destination | Recommended Route |
| Liberation Road | Tema | Airport Bypass → Flowerpot Junction → Motorway. |
| Liberation Road | East Legon | Airport Bypass → East Legon Underpass. |
| J.J. Rawlings Road | Liberation Road | Gulf House → GIMPA Road → Fiesta Royale → Villagio. |
| Tema | Liberation Road | N1 → Fiesta Royale → Left on North Airport Rd → Africa Regent Hotel. |
| Lapaz | Shiashie/Oponglo | GIMPA → University Road (Legon Hospital area) → Oponglo traffic light. |
Safety and Compliance
The expansion project, valued at over $350 million, aims to bring the bridge to a total of ten lanes (adding three on each side) to alleviate long-term congestion.
Safe Work Zone: The lane reductions are necessary to protect construction personnel during the dangerous process of launching heavy T-beams.
Traffic Officials: Motorists are urged to cooperate with the traffic management officials stationed along the corridor and to plan for an extra 30–60 minutes of travel time during operational windows.
