Haruna Iddrisu Returns to Parliament Following Recovery | Discuss Ghana

On Thursday, March 12, 2026, the Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, made his long-awaited return to the floor of Parliament.

His appearance marks his first official participation in parliamentary proceedings since he was involved in a serious road accident on February 12, 2026.


The Road to Recovery

The Minister's return follows a month-long period of medical leave and recuperation:

The Incident: On Thursday, February 12, Haruna Iddrisu and the Deputy Minister for Communications, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, were traveling in a convoy to the Upper West Region for the 40th-anniversary celebrations of the Tumu and Jahan Colleges of Education. Their vehicle was involved in a crash on the Bolgatanga-Tumu Road.

Hospitalization: Following the crash, the Minister was flown to Accra and admitted to the 37 Military Hospital.

Discharge: He was discharged on February 14, 2026, in "high spirits" but was advised by medical professionals to undergo a period of strict rest to ensure a full recovery.

Soft Re-entry: While he made a brief appearance for the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, Thursday marked his official return to active ministerial duties and legislative debate.




Maiden Address: A Focus on STEM and Teachers

Resuming his role with immediate effect, Minister Iddrisu addressed the House on several pressing educational matters

Teacher Recruitment: He reiterated the government's approval for the recruitment of 6,100 new teachers and assured the 2023 cohort that their salaries had been adequately captured in the GH₵39.2 billion 2026 education budget.

STEM Expansion: The Minister acknowledged the infrastructure legacy of the previous administration while outlining the "National Reset" plan to scale up STEM-focused tertiary schools across all regions.

Special Needs: He confirmed that starting in the 2026 academic year, learners with special needs will benefit from free education, including the provision of assistive devices.
