Akufo-Addo: Rebecca Has Been My Rock for 30 Years | Discuss Ghana

In a rare and intimate reflection on his personal life, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, as a "strong pillar" and the stabilizing force in his journey.

Speaking at a private event in March 2026, a video of which was sighted by local media on Friday, March 13, the former president opened up about the significance of their union, which has spanned more than three decades.

"Luck" and a Second Chance

The former president recounted that he considers himself "very lucky" to have reunited with Rebecca at a time when he was navigating a difficult period in his personal and professional life:

“I’ve been very lucky, very lucky, I want to repeat it, very lucky that at a time of difficulties I met Rebecca Griffith Randolph again, and that is some 30 years ago, and we have been together since then.”

Timeline: The couple has been together for roughly 30 years, though they formally married in 1997.

The Rock: Akufo-Addo emphasized that throughout the highs and lows of his political career and personal life, she has remained "like a rock" for him.

Candor on Marital Challenges

In a display of humble candor, Akufo-Addo admitted that their marriage, like any other, has faced its share of hurdles—often attributing them to himself:

Honest Reflection: "Like all people who are together, we have our issues, especially on my side," he remarked to a room of guests.

Exceptional Companion: He praised her for being a dependable partner and an exceptional mother to their five children.

Celebrating 73 Years of "Mama Becky"

The former president's tribute coincided with the birthday of the former First Lady, who celebrated her 73rd birthday on Thursday, March 12, 2026.
