Former President Akufo-Addo Urges Completion of Agenda 111 | Discuss Ghana

On the occasion of his 82nd birthday weekend (March 29–30, 2026), former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated his call for the current administration to prioritize the completion and commissioning of the Agenda 111 hospital projects.

The ambitious healthcare initiative, launched by his government in August 2021, was designed to bridge Ghana’s health infrastructure deficit by constructing 111 hospitals across the country.

The Call for Continuity

Speaking from his residence in Nima, where he spent a "quiet and reflective" birthday, the former President emphasized that the health of Ghanaians should transcend partisan politics:

A "Ghana First" Agenda: Akufo-Addo reminded the public that Agenda 111 was never just a political project but a "national necessity" exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Current Progress: Before leaving office in January 2025, Akufo-Addo noted that over 70% of the projects were at various stages of completion.

The Appeal: He urged the Mahama-led government to ensure that the $1.7 billion investment does not go to waste, calling for the remaining facilities to be "completed and put to use" for the benefit of all districts.

Agenda 111: The Vision and Reality

The project remains the largest healthcare infrastructure drive in Ghana's history, but it has faced significant hurdles:

Status PillarDetail
Original Goal101 District, 6 Regional, and 3 Specialized Hospitals.
Launch DateAugust 17, 2021 (Trede, Ashanti Region).
Projected Cost$16.88 Million per hospital ($1.7B total).
Current Status0% operational as of Feb 2025; massive push for 2026 completion.
Target Jobs25,000 construction jobs; 20,000 permanent health roles.

Pressure Mounting on the "National Reset"

The former President’s remarks coincide with a growing movement from civil society and political leaders demanding action:

Minority Appeal: Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin recently echoed the former President’s sentiments, urging the current government to view the hospitals as a "legacy for the people," not just the NPP.

Stalled Projects: In regions like Nhyinahin (Ashanti Region), residents have held protests as recently as March 14, 2026, over "abandoned" hospital sites that have seen no work for months.

The "2026 Milestone": Government sources suggest that at least 10 Agenda 111 projects are finally on track to be commissioned by the end of this year under the "National Reset" infrastructure audit.

"We laid the foundation for a medical hub in West Africa. My only prayer is that these facilities are finished so that no Ghanaian has to travel more than 5 kilometers to find a bed." — Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
