On Monday morning, March 30, 2026, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang visited the Accra Newtown Experimental School to inspect the scene of yesterday's deadly building collapse and to provide comfort to the survivors and bereaved families.
Her visit follows a marathon 18-hour rescue operation that concluded this morning, with the final toll confirmed at three dead and 20 rescued.
On-Site Inspection & Briefing
Accompanied by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, and the Chief Fire Officer, the Vice President was briefed on the structural failure of the uncompleted three-storey building:
The "Abandoned" Project: The Vice President expressed deep concern that an abandoned 14-year-old project was left unsecured on school grounds, eventually becoming a makeshift church for Sunday services.
Recovery Status: She was informed that 95% of the debris has been cleared and that all 23 individuals involved in the collapse have now been officially accounted for.
Structural Audit: Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reiterated the government's order for an immediate structural integrity audit of all buildings on the "Experimental School" campus before students are allowed to return.
Visit to 37 Military Hospital
Following her inspection of the site, the Vice President traveled to the 37 Military Hospital to personally check on the survivors:
Critical Care: She met with the medical team treating the five critical cases referred from Mamobi Polyclinic earlier today, ensuring they have every resource needed for their recovery.
A "State Responsibility": Speaking to the families of the injured, she confirmed that the Government of Ghana will bear all medical costs for the survivors, as well as the burial expenses for the three victims who lost their lives.
The Survivors: She spent time with the seven minors who were miraculously rescued alive, describing their survival as a "ray of hope" in a dark situation.
