Following the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday, February 27, 2026, the Minority Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alexander Afenyo-Markin, issued a strong directive to party members, asserting that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is destined to win the 2028 Presidential election.
Speaking in the wake of the President's address, Afenyo-Markin emphasized that Bawumia’s leadership is non-negotiable for the party’s future, stating that "any serious party member has no choice but to accept him".

Unity and the 2028 Mandate
The Minority Leader’s comments come just weeks after the January 31, 2026, NPP Presidential Primaries, where Dr. Bawumia was officially declared the party's flagbearer for the second time.
Divine Assurance: Using the phrase "God willing," Afenyo-Markin framed Bawumia’s potential 2028 victory as a spiritual and political certainty for the NPP.
Enforced Cohesion: He warned against internal dissent, suggesting that loyalty to Bawumia is the only path for those who wish to see the NPP return to power after the 2024 election defeat.
Rebutting the "Minority Coup": His remarks also served to silence rumors of a "Minority Caucus coup" intended to remove him from his leadership position, which he strongly dismissed as "political propaganda" earlier this month.
