President Mahama Reaffirms Industrial Vision at Zonda Tec Phase III Assembly Plant Commissioning | Discuss Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama officially commissioned the Phase III expansion of the Zonda Tec Ghana Limited Assembly Plant in Tema Golf City on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

The expansion increases Zonda Tec’s annual production capacity to 3,000 heavy-duty trucks, light commercial vehicles, and passenger cars, serving as a benchmark for Ghana's automotive industrialization strategy.

Key Highlights of the Presidential Address & Policy Directives

Transitioning to Integrated Manufacturing:
"Assembling cannot be our final destination. Our goal is to develop an integrated automotive industry in which locally produced materials and components feed directly into vehicle manufacturers... From minerals to batteries, from batteries to vehicles, from vehicles to exports, all proudly made in Ghana."
— H.E. John Dramani Mahama

Local Component Sourcing & VAT Framework:
Tax Incentive Requirements: The President announced plans in the upcoming budget framework to link VAT exemptions for vehicle assemblers to strict minimum local assembly and component-sourcing thresholds.

Targeted Supply Chain Items: Private firms are encouraged to invest in manufacturing batteries, tires, wiring harnesses, seats, glass, plastics, and metal parts domestically to connect large assemblers with local SMEs.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Ecosystem & Domestic Demand:

Resource Integration: Capitalizing on Ghana's strategic lithium deposits and expanding renewable energy grid to establish a regional hub for battery cell production and EV assembly.

Accessible Asset Financing: Called on financial institutions and credit providers to structure accessible, long-term auto loans so public sector workers and citizens can easily purchase Made-in-Ghana vehicles.

Job Creation & Skills Training:

The Phase III expansion is set to double Zonda Tec's direct workforce while creating approximately 1,000 indirect jobs in freight, component supply, and maintenance services.

The President praised the company's technical academy and scholarship foundation, which sends young Ghanaians abroad for specialized automotive engineering training.
