Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga Proposes Dedicated Lanes and Police Escorts for Aayalolo Buses | Discuss Ghana

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has proposed deploying police officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD) on motorbikes to escort Aayalolo buses along dedicated lanes during peak hours.

Speaking during an operational inspection tour of facilities run by the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), Ayariga emphasized that making the Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system genuinely rapid and reliable will entice private car owners to switch to public transit and ease urban congestion across Greater Accra.

Key Highlights of the Proposal

Dedicated Peak-Hour Corridors:

Dynamic Lane Allocations: Ayariga suggested reserving dedicated lanes for Aayalolo buses between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM for inward city travel, reversing the arrangement during evening rush hours.

Target Corridors: Priority transit lines targeted under the plan include Adenta–Accra Central, Kasoa–Accra Central, Amasaman–Accra Central, and Accra–Tema.

MTTD Motorbike Escorts & Inter-Ministerial Framework:

Police Facilitation: Under the proposal, MTTD officers on motorbikes would clear bottlenecks and escort buses through heavily congested intersections.

Cross-Sector Collaboration: The Minister plans to consult with the Minister for Transport, the Minister for Roads and Highways, the Minister for the Interior, and police leadership to formalize an operational framework.
