President Mahama Urges Ken Ofori-Atta to Return and Face Legal Accountability | Discuss Ghana

During his "Resetting Ghana Tour" in the Volta Region, President John Dramani Mahama directed a pointed appeal at the former Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, urging him to return voluntarily to Ghana to face ongoing accountability and state investigations.

The former Finance Minister is currently outside the jurisdiction, and the Ghanaian government has actively initiated legal extradition processes to secure his return. Commenting on the situation, President Mahama noted that extradition is an intricate, cross-border legal process that must respect individual rights, stating that the Attorney General’s Department has already submitted the necessary applications and requested documents to be reviewed by a judge in the United States.

Mahama used Ofori-Atta’s own historical words to make the appeal. He recalled a moment when over 80 Members of Parliament from Ofori-Atta's own party demanded his dismissal, yet the former minister famously refused to step down, likening himself to a dedicated father who could not abandon his children. Turning that metaphor around, Mahama questioned why a principled leader who believes they did no wrong would leave the country, urging him to come home and address the questions surrounding his long tenure over the national economy.
