The debate over the future leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has drawn a fierce, uncompromising line from the party's top hierarchy. NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande has emphatically shut down premature discussions regarding internal party elections and the next flagbearer race, declaring that his absolute and immediate priority is ensuring the success of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration. Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM with host Umaru Sanda Amadu, a highly expressive Gbande made it clear that he will not sit idly by while transition talk creates unnecessary distractions within the party structure.

"The mandate of the people comes first"

Gbande’s remarks were a direct response to growing murmurs and underground lobbying within certain factions of the NDC looking ahead to the post-Mahama era:

Silencing the Distractions: Gbande took a swipe at individuals trying to orchestrate succession plans early in the presidential term. "If anybody thinks I will be silent while people try to destabilize the focus of this government with future ambition, they are joking," he warned.

Protecting the Executive Mandate: The Deputy General Secretary emphasized that the party's primary duty to Ghanaians is delivering on its manifesto promises, stabilizing the economy, and executing the Resetting Ghana agenda.

Party Discipline Over Ambition: He reminded party loyalists that premature internal friction only benefits the opposition, urging all ambitious stalwarts to channel their energy into supporting cabinet ministers and state agencies rather than launching shadow campaigns.
