Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin Criticizes Government Economic Performance and GoldBod Operations | Discuss Ghana

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has launched a sharp critique of the government’s economic management, citing multi-million dollar losses recorded under the state-backed Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) initiative.

Debating financial governance on the floor of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin argued that despite official claims of success, the GoldBod mechanism—specifically its gold-purchasing operations linked to the central bank—has suffered significant trading losses totaling hundreds of millions of dollars. He insisted that lifting the veil on GoldBod's financial transactions would expose severe operational inefficiencies, middle-man fees, and fiscal risks. The Minority Leader maintained that the current administration's intervention has failed to deliver sustainable economic relief, calling for greater transparency and legislative oversight of state gold trading policies.

Ensuring fiscal accountability and transparent commodity trading protocols remain central issues as lawmakers debate national economic strategy and central bank balance sheets.
