Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Calls for Discontinuation of Prosecution Against NDC Organiser Over False News Allegations | Discuss Ghana

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to immediately halt the prosecution of an NDC Agona West branch organiser arrested for allegedly making offensive comments against him.

In an official press statement released on July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia clarified that he neither sanctioned nor filed any complaint leading to the young man's arrest. Reaffirming his commitment to free expression, the former Vice President stated that offensive speech should be countered with better speech and truth rather than arrests, courtrooms, or state power. He urged authorities to drop all charges, release the citizen to his family, and called on political actors to focus on issues affecting ordinary Ghanaians.

Upholding free speech and avoiding state-led prosecutions over political commentary remain crucial safeguards for preserving Ghana’s democratic stability.
