AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf Criticizes South African Response to Xenophobic Violence | Discuss Ghana

Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep frustration over South Africa's handling of recurring anti-immigrant violence, stating that authorities in Pretoria are not taking adequate steps to stop xenophobic attacks.

Speaking alongside President John Dramani Mahama on the sidelines of an AU meeting in Accra, Mr. Youssouf warned that the ongoing violence targets African migrants and undermines continental unity and integration. He echoed concerns that key perpetrators funding and organizing these attacks continue to operate with impunity without decisive law enforcement action. His remarks come as Ghana and other member states push to formally place the escalating xenophobia on the agenda for the next African Union Summit.

Addressing systemic xenophobia with firm judicial action and strong political commitment is vital for preserving Pan-African solidarity and protecting citizens across the continent.
