With parts of the national capital layout already battling severe, wheel-deep water loggings following consecutive days of torrential downpours, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, has issued an urgent, high-stakes safety advisory to local populations.
In an official state alert broadcasted today, Thursday, May 28, 2026, the Regional Minister directed all citizens residing within identified low-lying and flood-prone enclaves to immediately activate emergency evacuation protocols and temporarily relocate to higher, safer grounds.
A Submerged Landscape Trapped in the Rains
The Minister's emergency warning lands alongside highly alarming visual evidence across the capital, featuring extensive damage to property and public transit lines.
Massive sections of major residential zones are currently sitting under heavy sheets of brown floodwater. The visual layout from the frontlines depicts a distressing scene: several commercial commercial buses and private vehicles are trapped and partially submerged up to their windows, while makeshift structures and local security walls have given way to the heavy currents.
With meteorologists predicting a continuous, intense wave of standard seasonal rains over the coming weeks, the regional administration is moving aggressively to prevent any potential loss of human lives:
The Flashpoint Zones: Areas historically vulnerable to rapid overflows—including parts of the Odaw drain catchment, Circle, Kaneshie, Weija, and Teshie—are being placed under high-alert monitoring by emergency services.
The Structural Chokeholds: Local authorities have reiterated that persistent structural challenges, particularly the choking of major drainage channels with plastic waste and the illegal construction of buildings on waterways, are drastically worsening the velocity of the current floods.
"Do Not Wait for the Water to Trap You"
Speaking through a joint-agency platform backed by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Hon. Linda Ocloo emphasized that while the state is actively deploying response assets, the immediate, proactive cooperation of ordinary citizens remains the ultimate line of defense:
"The seasonal rains have fully set in, and the volumes of water we are witnessing across the metropolis are incredibly dangerous. I am making a direct, passionate appeal to every single resident living in a flood-prone area: please do not wait for the water to trap you or your children inside your homes before you react. > Pack your essential documents, your medications, and your families, and temporarily relocate to safer grounds or stay with relatives on higher terrain immediately. Your lives are far too precious to be risked for the sake of protecting physical belongings. The regional coordinating council, in tight partnership with NADMO and local assemblies, is securing safe transit sanctuaries, but your immediate compliance with this directive is critical to ensuring we record zero casualties during this period."
