Akosombo is Fully Operational: All Six Turbines Back Online | Discuss Ghana

Delivering a major "May Day gift" to the nation today, Friday, May 1, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam has returned to 100% operational capacity.

Speaking during the National May Day celebrations at Jackson Park in Koforidua, the President confirmed that as of last night, all six turbines were successfully synchronized to the national grid, ending a week of intense "generation-side" pressure following the fire at the switchyard control room.

The Engineering Breakthrough

The President provided key details on how the VRA and GRIDCo teams managed the recovery after the April 23 fire that initially wiped out over 1,000MW of power.

Bypassing the Damage: The technical teams successfully implemented an emergency maneuver to bypass the burnt-out control room. This allowed them to remotely and manually restart the turbines while repairs to the main control center continue.

Rapid Stabilization: The restoration was a phased race against time. After bringing four units online by Wednesday and a fifth on Thursday afternoon, the final turbine was cleared for operation late Thursday night.

Dedication of the Worker: President Mahama hailed the engineers as "the nation's most valuable assets," noting that many had worked without sleep since the fire occurred to prevent a total collapse of the grid.

Commendation and Context

The President’s announcement was met with cheers from organized labor unions at the parade.

A Shared Success: Energy Minister John Jinapor also confirmed the "mission accomplished" status, thanking the leadership of VRA, GRIDCo, and ECG for their coordinated response.

Addressing Local Outages: While the main generation problem at Akosombo is solved, the President acknowledged that some neighborhoods—like Oyarifa, which suffered a transformer fire last night—may still experience localized faults. He reiterated that the Transformer Replacement Programme will continue to address these "weak links" in the distribution network.

Touring the Region: The announcement marks the highlight of Day 1 of the President’s "Resetting Ghana" tour in the Eastern Region.
