Trade Ministry Halts Planned Sachet Water Price Hike to Protect Consumers | Discuss Ghana

On Monday, April 6, 2026, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry announced that the price of sachet water will remain unchanged across Ghana, effectively halting a planned price increase that was set to take effect today.

The Ministry intervened following successful engagements with the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) and the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA), who agreed to voluntarily suspend the adjustment.

The Canceled Price Hike

Prior to the government's intervention, NASPAWAP had announced a significant upward revision of prices on April 2, citing a global shortage of polymers and rising costs driven by the ongoing conflict in Iran.

The proposed (but now suspended) price structure was:

Ex-factory Price: GH¢8 per bag of 30 sachets.

Ex-truck Price: GH¢10 per bag.

Maximum Retail Price: GH¢15 per bag.

Government Intervention and Next Steps

The Ministry described the decision to maintain current prices as a "National Reset" priority to shield citizens from the rising cost of living:

Consumer Protection: The Ministry emphasized its commitment to market stability and commended the producers for their cooperation in maintaining affordability.

Urgent Stakeholder Meeting: An emergency meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, 2026, between the Ministry and industry leaders to discuss sustainable solutions to the sector's challenges.

Local Input Strategy: The government has signaled plans to explore local polymer alternatives and other input subsidies to help manufacturers reduce their dependence on expensive international raw materials.
