The Tête-à-Tête at Peduase: Presidents Mahama and Mnangagwa Begin High-Level Talks | Discuss Ghana

On Thursday, April 2, 2026, the diplomatic focus of the West African sub-region shifted to the Peduase Presidential Lodge, as President John Dramani Mahama received his Zimbabwean counterpart, H.E. Emmerson Mnangagwa, for the core bilateral sessions of his three-day state visit.

Following a celebratory State Banquet held on Wednesday evening, the two leaders entered a closed-door tête-à-tête this morning to discuss sensitive regional security and political cooperation before opening the floor to their respective ministerial delegations.

The Bilateral Agenda: 7 Strategic Sectors

The expanded talks at Peduase are focused on finalizing several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at turning historical "goodwill" into a modern economic partnership:

Trade & Job Creation: Finding ways to increase the currently low trade volume (Ghana's 2024 exports to Zimbabwe were approximately $378,000).

Agriculture: Collaboration on the "Feed Ghana" initiative, leveraging Zimbabwe's expertise in large-scale grain production.

Health & Tech: Mnangagwa is scheduled to visit the Sweden-Ghana Medical Centre (SGMC) later today to observe Ghana's advancements in oncology and healthcare technology.

Sanitation & Environment: A scheduled tour of the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant will showcase Ghana's waste-to-energy models for potential replication in Harare.

Anti-Corruption: Discussions on harmonizing legal frameworks between the Ghana OSP and the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.

The "Pan-African" Context

President Mahama has framed this visit as a "National Reset" of Ghana’s traditional alliances:

Permanent Joint Commission (PJCC): These talks follow the successful first session of the Ghana-Zimbabwe PJCC held on March 27, 2026, which laid the groundwork for today’s agreements.

Symbolism: Following the talks, President Mnangagwa will lay a wreath at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, honoring the shared liberation history that bonded the two nations during the struggle for independence.
