At the official launch of the National AI Strategy at the Labadi Beach Hotel today, Friday, April 24, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama announced a massive financial commitment to cement Ghana’s place as Africa's premier technology hub.
The President detailed a two-pronged investment strategy designed to provide the physical infrastructure and the policy framework necessary for a successful "Digital Reset."
The Financial Breakdown
| Initiative | Investment | Purpose |
| National AI Computing Centre | $250 Million | To serve as the "nerve centre" for research, providing high-performance computing power for local startups and academia. |
| Strategy Implementation | $20 Million | Dedicated to the short-to-medium term execution of the National AI Strategy’s eight pillars. |
| Total Commitment | $270 Million | A bold investment to transition Ghana from a consumer to a producer of AI solutions. |
The Vision: Beyond the Laboratory
President Mahama emphasized that these "bold but necessary" investments are aimed at solving real-world Ghanaian problems:
The Nerve Centre: The $250 million computing centre is designed to support the entire African continent, allowing Ghanaian talent to build local solutions for agriculture, healthcare, and education.
Economic Sovereignty: By owning the infrastructure, Ghana aims to keep its data sovereign while inviting global giants like Google and Huawei to collaborate rather than just dominate.
Collective Success: The President called for a "grand alliance" between the state, private sector, and academia, stating, "The government alone cannot deliver the AI agenda."
Minister Sam George on "Africa’s AI Hub"
Following the President’s announcement, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, declared that Ghana is "capable and ready" to lead the continent.
"This strategy shows what we can accomplish when we collaborate and share the belief that Africa must define how AI works for our people, not just adopt it." — Hon. Sam Nartey George, April 24, 2026.
The Minister noted that the judiciary and legal fraternity have already been engaged to ensure the $20 million implementation fund also covers the creation of ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks to protect citizens' rights.
