In a major development today, Sunday, April 26, 2026, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has ordered the Acting CEO of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), Ing.
The decision follows a devastating fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre earlier this week, which knocked nearly 1,000 megawatts off the national grid and triggered widespread blackouts across southern and central Ghana.
The Akosombo Fallout
The fire, which occurred on Thursday, April 23, has exposed significant vulnerabilities in the national power infrastructure.
Pending Investigation: Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, who took over as Acting CEO in February 2025, will remain sidelined while a full-scale forensic audit investigates the cause of the fire and the subsequent failure of reserve margins.
National Audit: Minister Jinapor has ordered a nationwide audit of all energy infrastructure to prevent similar "shocks" to the system.
Export Suspension: All electricity exports to neighboring West African countries remain suspended to prioritize domestic supply.
Ashanti Region ECG Reshuffle
Simultaneously, the Minister has announced a "major shake-up" in the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.
For weeks, residents of Kumasi and surrounding districts have faced erratic power supply, which officials previously attributed to "technical faults" and "broken poles." However, the persistent nature of these outages, combined with the Akosombo crisis, has prompted a total reshuffle of top officials in the region to "strengthen operational efficiency."
What’s Next?
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has scheduled a high-level briefing to provide further clarity:
Date: Monday, April 27, 2026
Time: 2:00 PM
Agenda: Updates on the Akosombo restoration progress, the new leadership structure at GRIDCo, and the specific details of the ECG Ashanti Region reshuffle.
