Forgive Us, It Was a Slip: Chief of Staff in Tears While Apologizing to Pentecost Chairman | Discuss Ghana

In a moment of raw emotion that has become the defining highlight of his 60th birthday celebration, the Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, publicly apologized to the Church of Pentecost today, Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Speaking during his thanksgiving service at the PIWC Trasacco, a visibly moved Debrah broke down in tears as he appealed to the Church Chairman, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, to forgive the government for the "unfortunate" comments made by the CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mary Awusi.

The Apology: "Accept Us as Your Children"

Standing before a congregation that included President John Mahama, the Chief of Staff took full responsibility for the tension caused by Dr. Awusi’s recent radio outburst, in which she threatened to "deal with the Apostle as a politician" for his criticisms of galamsey.

The Appeal: "A few days ago, one of our colleagues slipped a bit against you," Debrah said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I want on this occasion to let the whole church forgive us. It was just a slip. It wasn't intentionally done to malign our church."

A Personal Plea: Debrah, whose own spiritual roots are deeply respected, begged the church to not hold the "slip" against the administration. "I believe sincerely that you forgive her and forgive us and accept us as your children."

De-escalation: The apology is seen as a strategic move to repair the government's relationship with one of Ghana’s largest and most influential religious bodies ahead of a critical political season.

The Response: "She Has Made Me More Popular"

Apostle Eric Nyamekye accepted the apology with grace and a touch of humor, effectively putting the matter to rest.

"This lady has actually made me more popular... I have therefore forgiven her. So don't worry, I want your heart [Julius Debrah's] to be at rest."Apostle Eric Nyamekye, April 26, 2026.

The Apostle noted that while he bears no ill will, the controversy has successfully drawn more national attention to the devastating impact of illegal mining on the country’s water bodies—the very issue he was originally highlighting.
