On the morning of Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, visited the scene of the Accra Newtown Experimental School building collapse to assess the damage and console the affected community.
His visit follows the tragic collapse on Sunday, March 29, which claimed three lives and left over 20 people injured.
A Call for Drastic Action
Standing amidst the rubble, the Ga Mantse delivered a stern message to city authorities and regulatory bodies regarding the "National Reset" of building safety:
Demolish Defective Structures: The King insisted that if engineers find any remaining parts of the building—or similar structures in the area—to be defective, they must be "completely broken down" and reconstructed from scratch.
No Room for Compromise:
"If the rest of the structures are unsafe, then they must be broken down and a new structure erected. We can't live like this. Safety, service, and regulation are key." — Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II.
Protecting the Children: He emphasized that his primary motivation for the visit was the safety of children, noting that the disaster could have been far worse if it had occurred during school hours.
Focus on Educational Infrastructure
The Ga Mantse specifically called for an immediate and rigorous inspection of school buildings in other parts of Accra to prevent a repeat of the Newtown tragedy:
High-Risk Areas: He urged authorities to prioritize structural audits in communities like Ayalolo and Mamprobi Sempe, where many school buildings are aged or uncompleted.
Regulatory Enforcement: The King lamented the "lapses in regulatory enforcement" and pledged his full support to NADMO and the Ghana National Fire Service to strengthen their inspection powers.
Consoling the Bereaved
During his tour, the Ga Mantse extended his deepest condolences to the families of the three deceased victims, whom he described as "mothers, fathers, siblings, and friends". He also expressed relief upon hearing that nine of the injured victims have already been treated and discharged from the hospital.
