President Mahama Joins Regional Leaders in Lungi for Landmark 69th ECOWAS Summit | Discuss Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama joined fellow West African Heads of State and Government in Sierra Leone for the opening of the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority, marking the climax of the 2026 ECOWAS Mid-Year Statutory Meetings.

Prior to the formal commencement of high-level proceedings, President Mahama participated alongside host President Julius Maada Bio and regional peers in a ceremonial tree-planting exercise—symbolizing collective environmental resilience—and joined in the official commissioning of the new Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre in Lungi, the purpose-built venue for this year's summit.

“The future of ECOWAS cannot be built exclusively within conference rooms,” President Mahama emphasized during his summit address. “It must be built in our classrooms, on our farms, our factories, our research institutions, our innovation hubs, our marketplaces, and our communities across the region.”

Key Deliberations and Regional Frameworks

The summit brought together leaders from across the bloc to address pressing security threats, economic cooperation, and institutional governance:

The ECOWAS Compact: Leaders evaluated progress on the proposed ECOWAS Compact, anchored on strategic autonomy, youth empowerment, digital transformation, and regional security infrastructure.

Security & Defense Readiness: President Mahama praised the simultaneous commissioning of the new Ultra-Portable Logistics Depot in Lungi, highlighting its strategic importance in boosting emergency response times and operational readiness for the ECOWAS Standby Force.

Diplomatic Support for Ghana: The summit unanimously endorsed Ghana’s petition to the African Union (AU) regarding anti-migrant and xenophobic violence in South Africa, aligning sub-regional diplomatic weight behind protective mechanisms for cross-border African citizens.

Generational Leadership Transition

The 69th Session concluded with major leadership transitions for the regional body:

New ECOWAS Authority Chair: President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal was unanimously elected to succeed President Julius Maada Bio as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

New ECOWAS Commission Leadership: Former Senegalese Defense Minister General Birame Diop was appointed as the incoming President of the ECOWAS Commission, slated to officially assume office on September 1, 2026, at the Commission's headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
