Foreign Minister Okudzeto Ablakwa Conveys Ghana's Congratulatory Message to President Bassirou Faye | Discuss Ghana

Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has formally issued a diplomatic statement on behalf of the Government of Ghana congratulating Senegalese President His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye following his election as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The congratulations follow the conclusion of the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where regional leaders unanimously selected the 46-year-old Senegalese leader to succeed outgoing Chair, Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio.

“Ghana congratulates the newly elected Chairman of ECOWAS, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, President of the Republic of Senegal,” Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa posted. “We wish him great success, wisdom and courage in his stewardship. President Faye can always count on Ghana’s principled support and genuine cooperation.”

Strengthening Sub-Regional Cooperation

The endorsement reinforces Ghana’s foreign policy commitment to supporting new regional leadership as ECOWAS tackles critical sub-regional challenges:

Sovereignty & Regional Integration: As Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Ablakwa highlighted Ghana's ready partnership with Dakar to advance trade, infrastructure projects (such as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline initiative), and regional security cooperation.

Diplomatic Strategy: Ghana's diplomatic corps will work closely with President Faye's incoming tenure and the newly appointed President of the ECOWAS Commission, Senegal’s General Birame Diop, to navigate regional reconciliation efforts with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) nations.

With Ghana pledging full diplomatic backing, President Faye begins his term as ECOWAS Chair focused on driving economic integration and restoring sub-regional cohesion across the 15-member bloc.
