Tracing the deep, intellectual lineage of the country's democratic tradition, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged a modern return to the foundational values of selfless leadership. Speaking at a colorful, high-vibe ceremony in the Bono Region, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia paid a glowing, uncompromised tribute to former Prime Minister Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia on what would have been his 113th birthday, calling on Ghanaians to build a nation anchored on faith, integrity, and active service.
The commemorative event took place over the weekend in Wenchi, Dr. Busia’s historic hometown. The gathering brought together a powerful assembly of senior political figures, traditional authorities, and clergy, including former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, and former Minister of Employment Ignatius Baffour Awuah.
Marking the occasion, the Busia family, relations, and friends formally dedicated a beautiful worship center to the Wenchi Jesus Saviour of the World Church in honor of the late Prime Minister, under the reflective theme: “Wenchi cathedral dedication, the Prof: A heart of faith.”
The Anatomy of a Civic and Spiritual Standard
Addressing the overflowing crowd, Dr. Bawumia bypassed standard partisan talking points to deliver a deeply philosophical lecture on what Dr. Busia’s legacy demands of the present generation:
Wenchi’s Gift of a "Thinker": Dr. Bawumia praised the chiefs and people of the Wenchi Traditional Area for birthing a historic leader who was not just a politician, but a world-class scholar. "Wenchi must be proud because the traditional area did not only produce a Prime Minister, but a thinker whose life history still invites us to think seriously about what leadership must mean," he stated dynamically.
A True Belief System in Action: Linking the cathedral dedication to Busia's lifelong values, Bawumia emphasized that faith must always translate beyond mere Sunday worship into active, practical obedience. He maintained that true belief requires helping the needy, practicing uncompromised justice, and ensuring that the poor are never forgotten in national development frameworks.
Empowering the Innovative Youth: The NPP flagbearer noted that the present generation of young Ghanaians represents a massive force of innovative technology and fresh solutions. He argued that truly honoring Busia means actively listening to the dreams and resilience of the youth to build a future that reflects their digital aspirations.
