Decentralizing heart care: Ho Teaching Hospital to get advanced cardiac center | Discuss Ghana

Ghana’s battle against cardiovascular disease is taking a massive leap forward as the government shifts specialized healthcare away from being exclusively centered in Accra. President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art advanced cardiac center at the Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH) to provide specialized heart care for the Volta Region and surrounding areas. Making the announcement during his "#ResettingGhana" working tour in the Volta Region on Thursday, July 16, 2026, the President emphasized that patients facing cardiac emergencies should not have to survive a grueling, hours-long road trip to Accra just to receive life-saving treatment.

A nationwide network of specialized heart care

The proposed facility in Ho is part of a deliberate, well-funded national plan to decentralize highly specialized cardiology and oncology services across Ghana’s teaching hospitals:

The Breakthrough in Accra: The announcement comes on the heels of the President commissioning the newly reconstructed Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC). The advanced lab has dramatically increased Accra's capacity for complex heart surgeries and non-invasive diagnostic procedures.

The Northern Lifeline: To serve the northern sector, the government is currently constructing a state-of-the-art Cardiology Centre at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), funded under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF).

The Ashanti Expansion: Additionally, a dedicated Cardiology Centre at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi is on track to be fully completed and handed over by August 2026.
