2026 BECE Results Expected by July 31; Reforms Introduced to School Selection System | Discuss Ghana

Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has announced that the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are expected to be officially released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on or before July 31, 2026.

Speaking at the government's Accountability Series press briefing at the Presidency in Accra, the Minister revealed that he received confirmation on the release timeline from the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

“I am reliably informed by the Director-General of GES that on or before July 31, the BECE results may be released,” Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu stated. “That will pave the way for the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) process to begin.”

Key Reforms to the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS)

Alongside the release date announcement, the Education Ministry outlined significant policy shifts aimed at increasing transparency and eliminating placement corruption:

Post-Results School Selection: Under the newly reconstituted CSSPS technical committee, candidates will now choose their preferred Senior High Schools (SHS) and TVET institutions only after their BECE results have been declared.

Merit-Based Placement: The Minister explained that selecting schools post-results allows parents and students to make realistic, data-driven decisions based on their actual grades rather than guesswork.

Non-Interference with WAEC: Reaffirming the independence of assessment bodies, Haruna Iddrisu emphasized that the Ministry will not interfere with WAEC's examination grading or processing routines.

STAR-J Expansion Project

To address long-standing capacity constraints that affect school placements, the Minister also highlighted the US$331 million Secondary Education Transformation for Access, Relevance and Results for Jobs (STAR-J) project.

The initiative will fund infrastructure upgrades across 210 senior high and technical schools nationwide—including expanding classrooms, dormitories, and laboratories—to systematically end the SHS double-track system by 2029.
