NDC Council of Elders Orders Immediate Halt to All Premature Presidential Campaigning | Discuss Ghana

The internal political landscape of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been hit with a strict, high-level administrative directive. In an official press statement released by the National Communication Bureau, the party's Council of Elders has ordered an immediate and total halt to all premature presidential campaign activities within the party.

The firm directive follows a high-stakes, extensive consultative meeting held between the Council of Elders and His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic and Leader of the NDC, on Friday, May 29, 2026.

Enforcing Party Discipline Over Internal Competition

The statement highlights a growing unease within the upper echelon of the NDC regarding reports of early mobilization, public endorsements, and political campaigning by certain interest blocs looking toward the post-Mahama era.

With the administration actively executing its national developmental programs, the Council explicitly warned that premature jockeying for the flagship role introduces unnecessary internal friction. They emphasized that the party’s undivided focus must remain entirely on state reconstruction:

The Resetting Agenda Priority: The Council reminded all party members that the NDC is currently mandated by the people of Ghana to deliver on national renewal. Every member is expected to devote their total energy and resources to supporting the "Government’s Resetting Agenda" aimed at improving the lives of Ghanaians, rather than creating divisive internal distractions.

Invoking Article 42: To anchor their directive in hard party law, the elders drew direct attention to Article 42 of the NDC Constitution, which strictly dictates the timing for picking a standard-bearer:

"The date and venue for the election of the Presidential Candidate shall be decided by the National Executive Committee (NEC), but that election shall take place at least twelve (12) months before a national election date if the Party is in power and at least twenty-four (24) months if the Party is not in power."

THE NDC CONSTITUTIONAL CAMPAIGN RULEBOOK:
┌────────────────────────────────────────┐ ┌────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ PARTY IN GOVERNANCE (IN POWER) │ │ PARTY IN OPPOSITION (OUT) │
├────────────────────────────────────────┤ ├────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ • Primaries Window: At least 12 months │ ── │ • Primaries Window: At least 24 months │
│ before the national election date │ ── │ before the national election date │
├────────────────────────────────────────┴──────┴────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Mandatory Directive: All forms of mobilization, publicity, and endorsements must CEASE. │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

A Clear Ultimatum to All Factions

By issuing this sweeping freeze, the Council of Elders has effectively blocked any undercover or open campaigning by ambitious party executives, prospective candidates, or grassroots pressure groups until the National Executive Committee (NEC) formally lays out the official guidelines and timetable.

The directive covers all forms of campaigning, mobilization, endorsements, and publicity designed to advance the presidential ambition of any individual. Coming at a time when President Mahama is executing high-profile international assignments—such as his high-powered working visit to London to engage with the global financial markets—the Council's swift intervention ensures that the ruling party presents a completely bulletproof, unified front focused entirely on governance and national stability.
