The regulatory response to growing concerns over public safety and gun misuse has culminated in an unprecedented, sweeping national directive. The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has announced the immediate revocation of all existing firearm and sidearm licences across the Republic of Ghana.

Making the dramatic policy declaration at the Information Services Department, the Minister revealed that the government is rolling out a completely overhauled, highly stringent re-registration regime. Moving forward, gun ownership will no longer be treated as a passive administrative renewal, but as a strictly monitored privilege conditional upon rigorous psychological and physical vetting.

The Three-Tier Vetting Matrix

The Interior Ministry's radical intervention systematically targets major regulatory loopholes, enforcing three non-negotiable hurdles that all current and prospective gun owners must pass before any weapon can be legally re-registered:

Mandatory Mental Health Screenings: "We’ve seen that people with mental health issues have already gone through the old system and hold sidearms," Minister Muntaka explained. The new framework introduces mandatory psychiatric assessments to verify that an applicant possesses absolute emotional and mental stability before handling a firearm.

Rigorous Drug Testing: In a bid to prevent legally registered weapons from falling into volatile hands, all applicants will be subjected to comprehensive drug screenings. Individuals testing positive for illicit substances or unprescribed narcotics will face automatic, permanent disqualification.

Practical Handling & Training: The Ministry is introducing mandatory practical firearm handling and safety training. This measure ensures that licence holders are fully versed in safe storage protocols, proper operational handling, and the strict legal parameters governing self-defense in Ghana.
