Flooding Issues Are Tackled: Linda Ocloo Defends Her Anti-Flood Interventions in Greater Accra | Discuss Ghana

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has double down on her administration's performance, insisting that her strategic engineering and regulatory operations have successfully brought the capital’s age-old drainage challenges under control.

Speaking in defense of her recent recognition as the Best Performing Regional Minister at the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards, Ocloo pushed back strongly against critics who have cited lingering drainage deficits to downplay her achievements. Pointing to an aggressive, ongoing campaign of structural interventions and law enforcement, the Minister confidently asserted: “I have tackled flooding in the Greater Accra Region. Issues of flooding are tackled.”

The Enforcement Drive Behind the Claim

While public skepticism remains high following seasonal downpours, Minister Ocloo's bold assertion is backed by a series of highly aggressive, zero-tolerance directives rolled out by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) across major flood-prone municipalities:

The Demolition Campaigns: The Minister has spearheaded extensive engineering exercises, explicitly ordering local assemblies—including the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly—to clear out structures blocking essential drainage channels.

Making "Enemies" for Safety: Acknowledging the political and social pushback from these exercises, Ocloo openly noted that enforcing physical planning regulations has made her "many enemies," but maintained that dismantling illegal structures on waterways is non-negotiable for saving lives.

Ending the Sanctuary for Indiscipline: Following a multi-disaster incident on June 3 involving localized floods, a building collapse at Adenta, and a fire outbreak, the Minister declared that Accra will no longer tolerate unauthorized construction or reckless waste disposal habits that choke drainage pathways.
