Regional Minister Linda Ocloo Issues 7-Day Ultimatum to Lapaz Street Traders | Discuss Ghana

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, has delivered a final warning to traders selling on the pavements and streets of Lapaz, giving them seven days to vacate the area.

Accompanied by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Nii Kpakpo Allotey, and the MCE for Okaikwei North, Christian Tetteh Badger, the Minister visited the bustling commercial hub today, Thursday, May 7, 2026, as part of a renewed effort to decongest one of the city's most congested transit points.

The "Balance of Trade and Traffic"

Minister Ocloo emphasized that while the government recognizes the importance of the informal sector, the current state of Lapaz is unsustainable for public safety.

Free Movement: The Minister explained that street hawking has choked the pedestrian walkways and even parts of the main road, making it nearly impossible for vehicles and pedestrians to move freely. "We support the market women and their businesses, but the streets must be clear. Pedestrians are forced onto the road, which is dangerous," she noted.

Seven-Day Ultimatum: Traders have until next Monday to move their wares. The Information Services Department (ISD) has been deployed to ensure all vendors are aware that enforcement will begin immediately after the deadline.

Alternative Spaces: As part of the decongestion plan, the Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has identified spaces in the Achimota, Kisseman, and Abeka markets to accommodate the displaced traders.

Political Context: A Busy Week for the Minister

The directive at Lapaz comes during a high-stakes week for Hon. Linda Ocloo, who is currently managing multiple regional issues:

The "Northern Posting" Retraction: Just yesterday, May 6, the Minister issued an unreserved apology for controversial remarks where she suggested that transferring staff to Northern Ghana was a "punishment." She clarified that it was a "genuine slip in communication" and reaffirmed her respect for all regions.

Ramsar Site Demolitions: Since Tuesday, May 5, she has been overseeing the demolition of illegal structures at the Sakumono Ramsar Site to mitigate perennial flooding—a move that has drawn both praise for environmental protection and criticism from affected homeowners.

Sanitation Drive: The Minister continues to champion the "Regional Sanitation Day" initiative, emphasizing that clearing the streets of Lapaz is a critical part of her broader urban renewal agenda.
