Dr. Jinapor Announces Nationwide Transformer Upgrade Schedule | Discuss Ghana

In a major push for transparency and grid stability, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, announced yesterday, Saturday, May 2, 2026, that a comprehensive nationwide timetable for transformer replacements will be published this coming week.

The announcement was made during the President’s "Resetting Ghana" tour in Koforidua and later reiterated during an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile.

The "Transparency Drive"

Minister Jinapor explained that the decision to publish a specific, area-by-area schedule is aimed at ending the uncertainty caused by localized outages.

Detailed Disclosures: "Yes, this week we are going to publish all the areas where we are going to change the transformers—specifically and individually," the Minister stated. He urged the media to help disseminate this information so Ghanaians can track the progress in their own neighborhoods.

140 Down, 300 to Go: Dr. Jinapor revealed that 140 new transformers have already been installed recently, with an additional 300 units scheduled for deployment in the coming weeks.

Accountability: By making the list public, the Ministry hopes to improve accountability and build trust, allowing residents to see exactly when their local "overloaded or obsolete" transformers will be upgraded to higher capacities (moving from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA in many cases).

Ending "Dumsor" Claims

The Minister used the platform to defend the government’s record on power stability, contrasting the current situation with past years.

Technical Faults vs. Generation Gaps: Dr. Jinapor maintained that recent interruptions are short-term technical upgrades, not the systemic "dumsor" (generation deficit) seen in 2024. He stated that the country currently has enough fuel and generation capacity.

Exporting Success: He noted that Ghana is not only meeting its domestic demand but is also currently exporting power to Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Togo.

Appreciating the Engineers: He once again commended the staff of VRA and GRIDCo for their "unparalleled" work in restoring the Akosombo substation following the fire in late April.
