Dome Kwabenya MP Kneels to Beg for Road Repairs | Discuss Ghana

In an emotional and viral moment, the Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Hon. Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, went on her knees today, Monday, May 11, 2026, to plead with the government to fix the "deplorable" roads leading to the Ga East Municipal Hospital.

The lawmaker made the passionate appeal during a visit to the hospital to celebrate Mother’s Day with patients and nursing mothers. Overwhelmed by the deteriorating state of the access route, she broke protocol to beg the Roads Minister and the contractor to prioritize the project.

The "Manhole" Crisis

Hon. Akurugu described the current state of the road as a "death trap" for emergency cases.

Emergency Dangers: She lamented that patients, particularly pregnant women in labor and those in critical condition, are being put at risk. "When there is an emergency, before some patients get to the hospital, they are almost dead because the road is so bad," she stated.

Beyond Potholes: In a quote that has quickly trended online, she remarked: "When I was in the car coming to the hospital, I was lamenting. It’s no longer a pothole; it’s a manhole.

Humanitarian Plea: The MP stressed that her decision to kneel was not for political theater but a desperate cry for human lives. "This is not political. It is about humanity. You never know who may need emergency care on this road one day," she added.

Engagements with the Roads Minister

The MP revealed that she has already been in active dialogue with the Ministry of Roads and Highways regarding the Ga East Municipal District road networks.

Contractor Identified: She noted that the Roads Minister had informed her that the contract for the rehabilitation was awarded to Oswell Construction (Oswald).

Stalled Progress: Despite her personal follow-ups with both the Minister and the contractor, she says no significant work has been done on this critical hospital stretch, prompting her to take this public stand.

Wider Road Agenda: This appeal comes just weeks after the MP successfully cut sod for a 5.2km road project in the Narmah Community and an 8.2km project in Ashongman, though she insists the hospital road is currently the most urgent "priority of life."

A Milestone MP

Hon. Elikplim Akurugu’s advocacy today is part of her active first term as the NDC MP for Dome Kwabenya, having defeated Mike Oquaye Jnr. in the historic December 2024 elections to flip the seat for the first time.

Since being sworn in on January 7, 2025, she has positioned herself as a champion for health and infrastructure in the constituency, recently donating medical and sports equipment to the municipal directorates.
