Cedi for Goals: Corporate Giants Pour Millions into Black Stars’ World Cup Fund | Discuss Ghana

In a massive show of corporate solidarity, the Ministry of Finance has received a fresh wave of financial contributions to bolster the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at a presentation ceremony in Accra today, Friday, May 8, 2026, the Deputy Minister for Finance and Chairman of the World Cup Fundraising Committee, Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, provided a breakdown of the latest donations aimed at hitting the government's $30 million target.

The "Big Bank" Boost

The highlight of today’s briefing was a significant commitment from the banking sector, led by Stanbic Bank Ghana, which has structured its support to drive the team deep into the tournament.

Stanbic Bank Ghana: A total pledge of GH¢3 million.

Upfront Support: GH¢1.5 million has been presented immediately to cover "bonus on bonus" for the playing body

Performance Incentive: The remaining GH¢1.5 million will be unlocked only if the team advances to the knockout rounds.

Newmont Ghana: The mining giant contributed GH¢500,000 as part of its corporate social responsibility to national sports.

OmniBSIC Bank: The bank joined the "Support the Stars" campaign with a donation of GH¢250,000.

The "Mahama Factor" and Total Progress

Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem noted that today's donations follow a landmark payment made last week on April 30 by Engineers & Planners.

Lead Sponsor: Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers & Planners, has already redeemed $2 million out of his massive $5 million pledge.

Cumulative Success: Since the launch of the fund by President John Dramani Mahama on March 20, 2026, the committee has raised over $12 million in dollar pledges and nearly GH¢30 million in local currency.

Transparency: All funds are being deposited into a dedicated account at the Bank of Ghana to ensure every pesewa is used for the team's logistics, training, and welfare in North America.

The Road to Mexico, Canada, and USA

The Deputy Minister emphasized that these funds are crucial for ensuring the Black Stars do not face the "bonus row" distractions of past tournaments.

"The response from Corporate Ghana has been overwhelming. From Stanbic’s performance-based bonus to the multi-million dollar support from E&P, we are building a war chest that will allow our boys to focus entirely on bringing the trophy home," Ampem stated.
