Suame Interchange: Government Clears $29M Debt and Injects Billions | Discuss Ghana

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced a major financial boost for the Suame Interchange project in Kumasi. During an inspection tour this week, the Minister confirmed that the government has officially cleared $29.5 million in outstanding debts owed to contractors.

In addition to settling the arrears, the government has approved an extra GH¢3 billion to accelerate the construction. The Minister clarified that this is new money intended to enhance the quality of the project and build the Kumasi Outer Ring Road, rather than funds diverted from the original budget.

Timeline for Completion: While the full three-tier interchange is now targeted for completion by late 2028, specific sections like the Suame Post Office overpass are expected to be finished by the end of this year.

Economic Impact: The injection of funds is part of the "Big Push" infrastructure agenda, designed to ease the massive traffic congestion in the Ashanti Region and improve trade routes toward the north.

Contractor Reassurance: With the debt cleared, contractors have been encouraged to work day and night to meet the revised schedules and provide "value for money" for the people of Kumasi.
