NPA Donates GH₵1 Million to MahamaCares Medical Trust Fund | Discuss Ghana

On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) officially presented a cheque for GH₵1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), popularly known as the MahamaCares initiative.

The donation, which marks the successful conclusion of the "Ghana Month Donation Drive," is aimed at providing financial relief and affordable healthcare for Ghanaians battling chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

A Fulfilled Promise for NCD Care

The contribution stems from a commitment made in October 2025 during a strategic meeting between the NPA and the Fund’s leadership:

The Vision: The donation aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s "National Reset" goal to subsidize the high costs of treating cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and kidney failures.

Focus on the North: During the ceremony, the NPA Chief Executive, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, urged the Fund to prioritize expanding interventions in Northern Ghana, specifically highlighting the dire need for more accessible dialysis services in the region.

Collective Action: Tameklo pledged to go beyond this financial gift by mobilizing other organizations within the NPA’s corporate network to support the Fund's mission.

Impact and Rollout (April 2026)

The Administrator of the Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, described the gesture as "timely and transformative" as the GMTF prepares for its full-scale nationwide rollout this month:

30-Facility Expansion: The funds will support the initial phase of deploying MahamaCares services to 30 selected medical facilities across all 16 regions.

Strategic Capacity: This GH₵1 million boost significantly strengthens the Fund’s ability to cover expensive treatments that are currently not fully catered for by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Appreciation: Darko-Opoku noted that while many institutions were approached, the NPA was among the few to respond with such "magnitude and sincerity".
