Mahama to Commission GH₵400M KNUST Teaching Hospital | Discuss Ghana

In a significant boost to Ghana’s medical infrastructure, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama is set to officially commission the long-awaited Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Teaching Hospital project.

The facility, valued at GH₵400 million, represents a cornerstone of the administration’s "National Reset" agenda, aimed at addressing the deficit in healthcare delivery and medical training in the Ashanti Region and beyond.

Project Overview & Impact

The commissioning of this state-of-the-art facility marks the completion of a project that has spanned several phases of development:

Financial Investment: The GH₵400 million investment covers the construction, specialized medical equipment, and the integration of digital health systems.

Medical Training: The hospital will serve as a primary clinical training ground for KNUST’s medical students, relieving the pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Bed Capacity & Specialization: The facility is designed to be a multi-disciplinary center, featuring advanced units for surgery, diagnostics, and emergency care.

Haruna Iddrisu’s Announcement

Speaking earlier today, Monday, April 13, 2026, Haruna Iddrisu emphasized that the project’s completion is a testament to the President's commitment to "finishing what was started" and ensuring value for money in public expenditure.

“The KNUST Teaching Hospital is not just a building; it is a promise kept to the academic community and the people of Ghana. This GH₵400 million facility will redefine medical excellence in the sub-region.” — Hon. Haruna Iddrisu
