Mahama Clarifies: Free Primary Healthcare Tricycles are Not Ambulances | Discuss Ghana

Amidst growing public debate and social media misinformation, President John Dramani Mahama has explicitly clarified the role of the newly commissioned tricycles under the Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) initiative. Speaking on Saturday, April 18, 2026, during his "Resetting Ghana" tour in the Northern Region, the President addressed viral claims that the vehicles were intended to serve as emergency ambulances.

"Let me be clear, those tricycles are not ambulances," the President stated at a sod-cutting ceremony in Bimbilla. He emphasized that the vehicles are specialized "transport solutions" designed to facilitate last-mile delivery of preventive services, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach communities where traditional vehicles struggle to navigate.

The Current Standings (April 19, 2026)

The clarification comes as the Ghana Health Service (GHS) also issued a formal statement to debunk "misleading" videos portraying the tricycles as hospital emergency units:

Outreach, Not Emergencies: The tricycles are intended for community health workers and volunteers to conduct home visits, screenings for hypertension and diabetes, and routine immunizations.

Cold-Chain Capability: Each tricycle is fitted with a specialized cargo compartment designed to transport vaccines and medical supplies while maintaining strict temperature requirements.

Regional Tailoring: President Mahama noted that while motorcycles are being deployed in the North for health workers who can ride them, the tricycles are a safer and more inclusive option for workers in other terrains, including female Community Health Nurses.

Phase One Rollout: The FPHC initiative, officially launched on April 15, 2026, is currently being rolled out across 150 districts to expand universal health coverage.
