Ghana Climbs to 15th in Africa for Cheapest Fuel Amid Global Price Surges | Discuss Ghana

As of April 2026, Ghana has significantly improved its regional standing, now ranking as the 15th cheapest country in Africa for petrol. This climb comes despite a sharp local price hike driven by the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has pushed global oil prices to nearly $100 per barrel.

The April 2026 Price Snapshot

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) set new price floors for the April 1–15 window, resulting in a substantial increase at the pumps:

Petrol (Gasoline): Rose from GH¢11.57 to GH¢13.30 per litre (+15%).

Diesel (Gas Oil): Climbed from GH¢14.35 to GH¢17.10 per litre (+19%).

LPG: Saw a marginal increase to GH¢10.71 per kilogram.

Why Ghana’s Rank Improved

While local prices are rising, Ghana’s position in Africa improved relative to other nations (moving up from its December 2025 position) because fuel costs in many peer countries have escalated even more drastically.

African Fuel Price Leaderboard (April 6, 2026):

RankCountry (Cheapest)Price per Litre (USD)
1Libya$0.023
2Angola$0.327
3Algeria$0.354
.........
15Ghana$1.303
.........
54Malawi (Most Expensive)$3.840

The "Strait of Hormuz" Factor

The primary driver for the current volatility is the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which 20% of the world's crude oil passes. The conflict in the Middle East has led to:

Supply Disruptions: Sea mines and blockades in the Persian Gulf.

Increased Revenue: Former Energy Minister Dr. Amin Adam noted that Ghana is actually seeing a GH¢8 billion windfall in crude export revenue because the 2026 budget was built on a conservative benchmark of $76.22 per barrel.

Potential Relief: Experts argue this windfall could be used to absorb shortfalls if the government chooses to reduce petroleum taxes to ease the burden on consumers.
