The 70/30 Rumour: Is the Black Stars' Money Being Stolen? | Discuss Ghana

There is a big rumour going around Ghana right now. People are saying that out of all the money being raised for the Black Stars for the 2026 World Cup, only 30% will go to the players.

The rumour says that the "Big Men" (the officials) will "blow" or keep 70% of the cash for themselves.

The Rumour: What People are Saying

Many fans are angry. They believe that:

The "Chop" is Ready: Officials are planning to spend most of the money on expensive hotels, first-class flights, and big "bonuses" for themselves.

Players are Last: The people actually playing the football will only get a small piece of the cake while the "suit and tie" men take the rest.

The Facts: What the Government Says

To stop the "trouble," the Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, and the GFA have shared the real numbers to show there is no "70/30" split:

Small Pay for Big Men: There are 5 people in charge of the team (The Management Committee). They are getting a total of $310,000 (about $62,000 each).

The Math: This $310,000 is only about 2% of the total budget—not 70%.

Most for the Boys: Over $6 million (nearly half the main budget) is set aside just for the players and their coaches for the first three games.

No "Free" Trips: President John Mahama has said that the government will not use public money to fly fans to the World Cup. This is to stop the "waste" of money seen in the past.

Why are People so Worried?

Ghanaians remember what happened at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Back then, millions of dollars were flown in on a plane because players didn't trust the officials. The "National Reset" in 2026 is supposed to fix this by showing the budget to everyone before the team leaves.

"Ghanaians deserve to know how their money is used. We are making the budget public so there are no secrets." — President John Dramani Mahama.
