On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, reflected on his childhood passion for football during a high-level visit to the English club Sunderland AFC.
Leading a parliamentary delegation to the United Kingdom, the Speaker shared a personal anecdote about how his father’s counsel steered him away from a potential career in sports toward the path of education and leadership.
"Focus on Education"
Speaking at the Stadium of Light, Speaker Bagbin revealed that he was an avid footballer in his youth but was encouraged to prioritize his studies:
A Passionate Player: "I’m a footballer myself from childhood. Those days football was just entertainment and so my dad advised me to focus on education," the Speaker stated.
The Father's Advice: He explained that during his upbringing in Sombo, his father viewed football primarily as a hobby rather than a viable profession, urging him to pursue "serious" academic goals instead.
The Result: Bagbin took the advice to heart, eventually becoming a lawyer and one of Ghana's longest-serving Parliamentarians, though he noted that he still carries a deep love for the game.
Strengthening the "Democracy Cup" Partnership
The visit was primarily focused on expanding the Democracy Cup, a football initiative founded by the Speaker to celebrate Ghana's democratic journey:
Sunderland Partnership: A new agreement was established where the winner of the 2026 Democracy Cup will travel to the UK to face Sunderland AFC in an international friendly.
Football Diplomacy: Bagbin emphasized using "football diplomacy" to showcase Ghana’s democratic stability and attract investment and tourism.
Historical Link: Sunderland officials acknowledged the club's strong connection to Ghana, particularly through former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, who remains a fan favorite at the club.
Tapping into Global Expertise
The Speaker and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports toured Sunderland’s facilities to learn about modern football administration:
Professional Standards: The delegation observed how Sunderland manages its fan engagement and youth development, with the aim of bringing these "best practices" back to the Ghana Premier League.
Soccer School of Excellence: Bagbin used the platform to advocate for his proposed Democracy Soccer School of Excellence, which would combine elite football training with civic education for young Ghanaians.
