President Mahama Strengthens Ties with South Korean National Assembly | Discuss Ghana

On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama held a high-level meeting with the Speaker of the South Korean National Assembly, Woo Won-shik, as part of his five-day working visit to the Republic of Korea.

The discussions centered on enhancing parliamentary diplomacy and deepening bilateral cooperation between Ghana and South Korea.

The meeting with Speaker Woo Won-shik aimed to solidify the legislative foundation for the agreements signed during the President's visit:

Legislative Exchange: Both leaders expressed commitment to fostering regular exchanges between the Parliament of Ghana and the National Assembly of Korea to share best practices in governance and digital legislation.

Investment Protection: Discussions touched on creating a stable legislative environment to support the newly signed $2 billion cooperation framework for infrastructure, energy, and technology projects.

Shared Values: Speaker Woo noted that Ghana remains a strategic partner for Korea in Africa, citing their shared commitment to democracy and human rights.


Broader Context of the Visit

The meeting with the Speaker followed a successful summit between President Mahama and his South Korean counterpart, President Lee Jae-myung:

Three Key Agreements: The visit culminated in the signing of three major Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) covering Maritime Security, Climate Change, and Digital Innovation.

Maritime Security: A specific agreement between the Korea Coast Guard and the Ghana Navy will see Korea provide intelligence sharing and training to help Ghana combat piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

Industrial Milestones: During his stay, President Mahama also traveled to Ulsan for a ship-naming ceremony at Hyundai Heavy Industries and was awarded an Honorary PhD by Yonsei University.

Strengthening the Korea-Africa Bridge

President Mahama highlighted Ghana’s role as the host of the AfCFTA Secretariat, positioning the country as a gateway for South Korean businesses into the wider African market. Speaker Woo Won-shik reaffirmed that the National Assembly would support policies that encourage Korean investment in Ghana’s automotive, agribusiness, and railway sectors.
