President Mahama Rallies Support for Black Stars in Philadelphia | Discuss Ghana

On Friday, March 27, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama addressed the Ghanaian diaspora and international supporters at the International Statesperson Award ceremony in Philadelphia, reinforcing his commitment to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Reflecting on a high-profile $30 million fundraising campaign launched just days before his departure from Accra, the President described football as Ghana's "most powerful brand ambassador" and a vital tool for national visibility.

The "Kempinski Kick-off": Mobilizing $30 Million

Just before traveling to the U.S. for the UN session on reparatory justice, President Mahama officially launched the Ghana World Cup Fundraising Drive at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on March 20, 2026:

The Goal: The committee aims to raise $30 million from corporate bodies and private individuals to ensure the team is "competitively equipped" without relying solely on the state's direct funds.

Major Pledges:

Engineers & Planners (E&P): Committed $5 million as the headline sponsor.

Gold Fields: Pledged $2 million for immediate support.

Serene Insurance: Announced a GH¢22 million package, including GH¢2 million in cash and a GH¢20 million accident insurance cover for players, staff, and sponsored fans.

Entertainment Stars: Dancehall icons Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy pledged $100,000 and $101,000, respectively.

Strategic Rallies in the U.S.

Speaking in Pennsylvania—a state with deep historical ties to Ghana through Lincoln University—the President encouraged the local diaspora to become the team's "12th man":

Mobilizing the Diaspora: "There are many Ghanaians here in the United States, and we’re going to mobilize all of you to come to the game," Mahama stated, acknowledging that immigration measures may make it difficult for fans to travel from Ghana.

Branding the Nation: He emphasized that a successful World Cup run is more than sport; it is a catalyst for tourism and foreign investment, showcasing the "Ghanaian Spirit" on a grand stage.

Group L Challenge: The President noted the formidable task ahead in Group L, where Ghana will face Panama (Toronto, June 17), England (Boston, June 23), and Croatia (Philadelphia, June 27).

The World Cup Budget: A Fiscal Framework

While the fundraiser targets $30 million for holistic support, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has proposed a core operational budget of approximately $13.7 million (GH¢146 million):
