President Mahama Doubles Security Recruitment Target from 20,000 to 40,000 | Discuss Ghana

On Monday, March 16, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama directed a massive expansion of the ongoing national security recruitment exercise. Following a high-level briefing with security heads and sector ministers, the President ordered that the recruitment target be doubled from the initial 20,000 to 40,000 personnel over a four-year period.

The directive comes amidst overwhelming public interest, with reports indicating that over 500,000 young Ghanaians applied for roles across various agencies under the Ministry of the Interior.

Expanding the Force to 40,000 Personnel

The statement, issued by the Minister for Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, outlines a strategic effort to bolster national security and address youth unemployment:

The New Target: The total intake across all security agencies is now set at 40,000 men and women.

Timeline: This expansion will be implemented over a four-year roadmap to ensure sustainable funding and training capacity.

Addressing the Backlog: The move is seen as a direct response to the massive "backlog" of applicants, many of whom were left disillusioned when it was initially revealed that only 5,000 immediate slots were available.

Transparency and Fairness Mandate

In addition to increasing the numbers, President Mahama issued a stern directive to the heads of security agencies regarding the integrity of the process:

  1. Ensuring Fairness: The President emphasized that the recruitment must be conducted with the highest levels of transparency and fairness, ensuring that every qualified Ghanaian has an equal opportunity regardless of their background.

  2. Agency Coordination: The meeting included the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Comptroller-General of Immigration, and the Directors General of Prisons, Fire Service, and the Narcotics Control Commission.

  3. Ministerial Oversight: Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mubarak and Acting Defence Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson were tasked with supervising the revised rollout to ensure it remains within fiscal guidelines.

Strategic Context: National Security and Jobs

The decision to scale up to 40,000 recruits follows weeks of intense public debate and criticism from the Minority in Parliament, who had labeled the initial recruitment process a "Ponzi scheme" due to the high application fees collected from over half a million people for very few spots.

By doubling the quota and extending the timeframe, the administration aims to:

  • Strengthen the country's defense against regional security threats.

  • Fulfill a key "National Reset" campaign promise of job creation.

  • Restore public confidence in the recruitment systems of the Ghana Police, Immigration, and Fire Services.
