"Our Future Is in Your Hands": BECE Awardees Deliver Letter to President Mahama | Discuss Ghana

During the 69th Presidential Awards on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, a poignant moment occurred when representatives of the top 52 BECE awardees presented a formal written letter to Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

The students requested that the Vice President personally deliver the message to President John Dramani Mahama, who was unable to attend the ceremony due to official state duties involving the visiting Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Contents of the "Letter to the President"

While the full text of the letter was not read aloud, the student spokesperson shared the core sentiments of the message with the audience:

Expression of Gratitude: The awardees thanked the President for the "Independence Day Awards" initiative and the support provided to them, including the new laptops and educational supplies.

Call for Educational Stability: The letter reportedly urged the President to ensure that the current "Reset" in the education sector prioritizes consistency in the curriculum and the elimination of "schools under trees".

Commitment to Ghana: The students pledged their commitment to remain in Ghana and contribute to the "Building Prosperity" agenda, provided the state continues to create an environment where merit is rewarded.

Inclusivity Plea: The four awardees with special needs included a specific note requesting more braille and sign-language resources in Senior High Schools across all 16 regions.

The Vice President’s Response

Accepting the letter on behalf of the President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang—a career educator herself—assured the students that their voices were being heard at the highest level of government:

"I will personally hand this to the President tonight. Your courage to write to your leader shows that we are not just raising scholars, but active, engaged citizens who care about the direction of our country."
